A Gloucester couple are commemorating their 60th wedding anniversary today and reminiscing about their unique big day, which coincided with England’s famous victory in the 1966 World Cup final.
On 30 July 1966, England defeated West Germany 4-2 at Wembley Stadium, clinching the nation’s first World Cup title. Remarkably, John and Nigella Tyson exchanged their wedding vows at the exact time the final kicked off – 3pm.
The couple, who reside in Gloucester, invited approximately 100 guests to join their wedding ceremony and reception. However, when it came time to cut the cake, many guests left to watch the crucial match unfold on television.

John Tyson, 89, a retired maths teacher, recalled, “We booked the date long before knowing England would reach the final. In the hectic lead-up to the wedding, we barely noticed our timing coincided with the match.”
Their wedding took place in the chapel of Abingdon School, Oxfordshire, where John had worked as a maths teacher. The reception followed in one of the school’s Georgian mansion houses, Waste Court, where Nigella’s father was a housemaster.
“A small black and white TV in the sitting room meant our guests could easily watch the match,” John explained. “About a third of them left the reception to watch the game, so there weren’t many left for the cake-cutting, but everyone returned afterwards to keep celebrating.”
Although John was not an avid football fan, the couple appreciated the presence of their officiant, who remained with them throughout the ceremony despite his passion for the sport.
In honour of their Diamond anniversary, John and Nigella reached out to the Football Association to share their story. They received a commemorative certificate signed by FA Chair Debbie Hewitt and Sir Geoff Hurst, England’s hero who scored a hat-trick in the final.
“We also sent them a wedding photo, which Sir Geoff signed with the words ‘A great team,’” John said proudly.
The couple, who have three children and seven grandchildren, followed this year’s World Cup with keen interest. Nigella reflected, “It would have been wonderful if England had repeated their success. We were disappointed with the outcome, but proud of the team’s performance, especially in the match against France.”
Asked about the key to a lasting marriage, John joked, “The gentleman should always give way to his wife.” Nigella added, “It’s about teamwork. We each have different strengths.”
To celebrate their milestone anniversary, John and Nigella plan to attend the Three Choirs Festival at Gloucester Cathedral this evening, continuing their celebrations over the weekend surrounded by family and friends.
