John and Nigella Tyson from Gloucester are marking a remarkable milestone this year, celebrating their 60th wedding anniversary while reflecting on a very special coincidence on the day they tied the knot. Their wedding, held on 30 July 1966, fell on the same day as England’s historic World Cup final triumph at Wembley Stadium, a match that saw England defeat West Germany 4-2.
In an extraordinary twist of timing, the couple’s wedding ceremony began at 3pm-the exact moment the World Cup final kicked off. Approximately 100 guests gathered to witness their vows at the chapel of Abingdon School in Oxfordshire, where John was a maths teacher and Nigella’s father served as a housemaster.
The wedding reception took place in one of the school’s Georgian mansion houses, Waste Court, where a small black and white television was set up in the sitting room. As England’s performance improved, many guests couldn’t resist following the action, leading to an emptying of the reception room just as the couple prepared to cut their cake.

“About a third of our guests went to watch the match as England were doing quite well,” John recalled with a smile. “Not many were left for the cake cutting, but they returned to celebrate with us after the game.”
Though John was not particularly fond of football at the time, the registrar who officiated the ceremony was a keen supporter and stayed with the couple throughout the service.
As they approach their Diamond anniversary, John and Nigella reached out to the Football Association to share their story. In response, they received a commemorative certificate signed by FA Chair Debbie Hewitt and Sir Geoff Hurst, England’s hero who scored a hat-trick in the final. They also received a wedding photograph signed by Sir Geoff, who inscribed it with the message “A great team.”
The couple, who have three children and seven grandchildren, have followed England’s recent World Cup efforts with interest, though Nigella expressed some disappointment at the team’s exit. “It would have been lovely if they could have repeated 1966’s success,” she said.
When asked the secret to their enduring marriage, John quipped, “The gentleman should always give way to his wife.” Nigella added, “It’s about teamwork; we both bring different strengths.”
This evening, the couple will celebrate their anniversary at the Three Choirs Festival at Gloucester Cathedral before continuing their celebrations throughout the weekend with family and friends.
