John and Nigella Tyson from Gloucester are marking their diamond wedding anniversary today, reflecting fondly on the remarkable coincidence of their wedding day falling on the same day as England’s iconic 1966 World Cup final victory.
It was 60 years ago, on 30 July 1966, that England defeated West Germany 4-2 at Wembley Stadium in a thrilling match. Uniquely, John’s and Nigella’s marriage ceremony began at 3pm, precisely when the football final kicked off.
The couple, now aged 89 and 81 respectively, had invited around 100 guests to share their special day. All attended the ceremony, but many slipped away during the reception just as the couple were about to cut their wedding cake, drawn to the small black and white television in the Georgian mansion where the reception was held to follow the match.

John, a former maths teacher who worked at Abingdon School in Oxfordshire where the wedding took place, explained: “We had booked the date before realising England would be in the final. We were so busy organising the wedding, the football didn’t fully register with us at first.”
Nigella’s father was housemaster at the school, responsible for the boarding house called Waste Court, which also hosted the reception. The couple joked that the television’s presence meant guests didn’t have to travel far to catch the game, though about a third left to watch England’s progress, temporarily thinning the crowd for the cake cutting.
“Not many people were there for the cake cutting. But they came back to celebrate with us once the match had finished,” John recalled.
John also shared that despite not being a football enthusiast at the time, their officiant was, and he stayed present throughout the ceremony, appreciating both the nuptials and the match.
To commemorate their unique wedding day tie-in with football history, the Tysons recently reached out to the Football Association. They received a thoughtful response including a commemorative certificate signed by FA Chair Debbie Hewitt and Sir Geoff Hurst, the West Ham legend who scored a hat-trick in the final. The FA also returned a wedding group photo signed by Sir Geoff, who added the note “A great team.”
The couple, grandparents to seven, followed this year’s World Cup with interest. Nigella expressed their disappointment at England not being able to replicate 1966’s success but praised the team’s performance: “We were very sad with the way it ended – but we had a good match against France.”
When asked about the secret to their lasting marriage, John quipped, “The gentleman should always give way to his wife,” while Nigella emphasised “It’s about teamwork. We’re both good at different things.”
Tonight, to mark 60 years of marriage, John and Nigella will attend the Three Choirs Festival at Gloucester Cathedral, before continuing celebratory events over the coming weekend surrounded by family and friends.
