Gloucester City Council has provided an update on several prominent regeneration projects and longstanding eyesores within the city. Key sites such as Spread Eagle Court, St Oswalds, the former Wessex House location, and the Whitefriars development are all progressing at various stages.
At the July 9 cabinet meeting, Conservative group leader Stephanie Chambers requested a status report on the developments. Council leader and regeneration lead Jeremy Hilton delivered a detailed written update.
Regarding the Whitefriars project’s Plot 3c, demolition of the former Thai restaurant is scheduled to begin next month as remediation work continues. In addition, a new planning application will increase the planned apartments from 24 to at least 32 units to meet government grant funding criteria.

For the St Oswalds site, a planning application for residential redevelopment is in preparation and will be submitted shortly. Remediation efforts are advancing alongside the application process.
Wessex House is nearing the tender stage for its main remediation contract, expected within the next two weeks, with a preferred bidder anticipated later this year. Meanwhile, a massing options appraisal is being conducted to determine the site’s redevelopment potential.
Spread Eagle Court remains under private ownership and is currently in a state of significant disrepair. To address public safety concerns, the council has secured the property’s entrances and installed metal shutters to prevent vandalism.
In addition to project updates, Cllr Chambers requested a report on all buildings classified as dangerous structures in Gloucester over the past year. Cllr Hilton confirmed the council will provide her with a written response.
