Gloucester City’s Ben Richards-Everton Announces Surprise Retirement

Gloucester City defender Ben Richards-Everton has announced his retirement from professional football, citing ongoing personal and health challenges.

The 34-year-old, who rejoined the Tigers in the summer of 2024 following manager Mike Cook’s appointment, made the difficult decision after struggling with a recurring injury that has troubled him for several years.

Richards-Everton initially signed with Gloucester City in 2023 but left in March that season, only to return later and become a key figure in the team’s defensive line-up.

City manager Daf Williams expressed his deep regret at the news but emphasized the importance of health and family above all else. “It’s just gutting,” Williams admitted. “But some things are more important than football – family and health are at the top of that list. Ben leaves with our full support and best wishes.”

Williams praised Richards-Everton’s contribution both on and off the field, describing him as “fantastic” and “class” since he arrived at the club. “He’s been invaluable to me personally and to the club over the past few years. We’re all genuinely saddened, but we respect his decision as the right one for this stage of his life and career. A massive thank you to him from everyone.”

In a touching farewell, Gloucester City held a special memorial for Richards-Everton at the KMM Energy Stadium, giving fans the opportunity to say goodbye to the respected defender.
