Gloucester City Suffer Heavy Defeat in Southern League Premier South Play-Off Final at Farnham Town

Gloucester City’s manager, Daf Williams, expressed his disappointment following a crushing 5-1 defeat to Farnham Town in the Southern League Premier South play-off final held on Monday afternoon. Despite a dominant first half, City were unable to convert their chances, leaving the door open for Farnham’s resurgence.

During the opening 45 minutes, Gloucester City showed control and creativity, dictating possession and applying pressure. However, they failed to find the back of the net, which proved costly. At halftime, Farnham came out revitalized and quickly shifted the momentum. Within two minutes, a penalty was awarded for a handball, which Darryl Sanders confidently converted, igniting the home crowd.

Farnham extended their lead 15 minutes later through substitute Billy Clifford, who capitalized on a swift counterattack to strike into the bottom corner. The situation deteriorated further for Gloucester when Bobby-Joe Taylor fired in a long-range effort just minutes after, giving Farnham a commanding 3-0 advantage and nearly securing their promotion.

Gloucester managed to pull a goal back in the 69th minute when Kane Simpson exploited a misplaced Farnham goalkeeper to slot home. However, the City’s push forward opened defensive gaps, allowing Clifford to seize two more opportunities, scoring in the 84th minute and then completing an astounding second-half hat-trick with a goal in the final minute, sealing a memorable victory for Farnham Town and their third consecutive promotion.

Reflecting on the match, Williams said, “I want to apologize to our loyal supporters who came out today. They’re incredible, and it’s disappointing not to have delivered. We played well in the first half but fell apart during that crucial 10 to 12-minute stretch. It’s unusual for us to concede so quickly, and those moments turned the game.”

Looking ahead, Williams remains optimistic: “I’ve loved working with these players, and though today’s result hurts, it’s not about assigning blame. We’ll regroup, learn from this, and come back stronger next season. With the experience gained this year, we plan to build a robust squad capable of fighting for promotion again.”
