Gloucester City manager Daf Williams expressed satisfaction after his team’s commanding 2-0 victory against Chertsey Town on Saturday, a result that has tightened the race at the top of the league to just two points.
Despite dominating play throughout the first half and generating numerous scoring opportunities, Gloucester was unable to break the deadlock until early in the second half. Five minutes after the restart, Marcus Day delivered a precise cross that found Sion Spence. Spence rose above the defenders to head the ball into the top-left corner, giving City a well-deserved lead.
The Tigers doubled their advantage shortly after, in the 54th minute. Harry Pinchard’s dynamic run into the box created space for Kane Simpson, who expertly slotted the ball high into the net from a narrow angle. This marked Simpson’s fifth goal in four games, demonstrating his current sharp form.

From that point on, Gloucester controlled the match comfortably, securing three crucial points. The victory was made even more significant by promotion rivals Walton & Hersham dropping points at home to Hungerford Town, reducing the top spot gap to just two points.
Williams praised his team’s defensive solidity: “The challenge was to be back on Tuesday with a clean sheet, which we’ve done. It’s a real positive.” However, he acknowledged room for improvement in finishing: “I’m slightly disappointed that we didn’t score more. Our decision-making in the final third was inconsistent, especially in the second half. We need to be more clinical and kill games off when opportunities arise.”
Spence’s opener marked his return to the starting lineup after a brief absence, a development Williams welcomed enthusiastically: “Sion is a goal-scoring midfielder who’s coming back from a spell on the sidelines. It’s great he’s back in contention, gaining minutes, and scoring today. Hopefully, this will help him build momentum going forward.”
Gloucester City now prepare for an important home fixture against Farnham Town. The two sides previously played out an entertaining 3-3 draw this season, and Williams knows the upcoming match will be challenging: “Farnham are a strong team with a skilled manager and are well organized. We’ve done our homework and are a step ahead tactically, but we must be on top form to get a result.”
