Gloucester City Manager Reflects on Draw with Gosport Borough

by Joe Fenwick Tags

Gloucester City manager, Mike Cook, expressed his disappointment with the final score of the match but is now shifting his focus to the upcoming play-off challenge.

The TigerTurf Stadium saw a turnout of 1,234 fans as Gloucester City settled for a 2-2 draw against Gosport Borough on the last day of the regular season.

Despite gaining a two-goal advantage, the Tigers lost their lead in an unfortunate turn of events, reflecting a recurring pattern seen throughout the season.

Cook commented, “Frustrating, that’s a good word to use; it’s been a bit like that all season where we should have gone in 3-0, 4-0 up and then teams have got back in the game. I just thought we thoroughly played them off the park, we were miles better than them, we had the chances to put them to bed.”

Reflecting on the upcoming play-off, Cook emphasized the need to leave the result behind and focus solely on the match scheduled for Wednesday.

The match saw Harry Burns securing an early lead for City within two minutes, followed by Curtis Jemmett-Hutson’s cross leading to a 2-0 advantage through an own goal by a Gosport defender.

However, Gosport Borough managed to narrow the gap before halftime with Asher Yearwood finding the net, and ultimately equalizing through a penalty kick in the second half, resulting in a red card for Harry Emmett.

The match also marked the final home game for club captain Kevin Dawson, who announced his retirement at the end of the 24/25 season, a loss that Cook acknowledged and expressed reluctance to see him depart.

Looking ahead, City’s focus is now on the play-offs with the aim of reclaiming their spot in the National League North/South.

In preparation for the crucial match against Walton & Hersham, Cook stressed the importance of regrouping and ensuring the team is mentally prepared.

Gloucester City will look to bounce back from the draw and focus on securing a victory in the upcoming match as they aim to progress through the play-offs.
