Gloucester’s city centre will retain its post office services, but the fight to keep the branch at its current Kings Square location is far from over, according to local MP Alex McIntyre. Hundreds of residents have supported the Labour MP’s petition aimed at preventing the closure of the Kings Square Post Office.
In November, Post Office management announced plans that could see up to 115 wholly-owned branches and hundreds of jobs at risk due to a broader business restructure. The strategy includes converting some branches into franchises operated by third parties.
MP McIntyre welcomed the confirmation that post office services will remain in Gloucester’s city centre but emphasized ongoing efforts to secure the Kings Square site specifically.

“Since being elected last year, I have been relentless in campaigning to protect our city centre post office services,” McIntyre said. “I have raised this issue in the House of Commons, met with the Post Office minister, engaged directly with Post Office leadership, and organized a petition that hundreds of local people have signed.”
He added, “I’m pleased to report our success in ensuring that post office services will continue here, with a new franchisee set to take over the current Kings Square branch. I look forward to meeting the new sub-postmaster to discuss the future of this crucial site.”
The MP also highlighted ongoing development projects in the area, including the upcoming full opening of the Forum and the university campus with its integrated library, as reasons why keeping the post office in Kings Square remains vital.
“This is a positive step forward,” McIntyre said. “We will retain essential post office services that many rely on in the city centre, but our campaign to keep these services at Kings Square continues.”
