Gloucester BMX Track Set to Open This Year

Gloucester looks poised to welcome a new BMX track at Coney Hill Park, with hopes of opening later this year. The idea for the ‘Pump Track’ was first introduced at a Gloucester City Council meeting over two years ago, back in November 2021, as a means to promote outdoor activities and encourage physical fitness among residents.

The proposal was initiated by Councillor Alistair Chambers and supported by Councillor Brendan O’Donnell, initially targeting an opening date around April 2026. However, recent updates from a Gloucester City Council spokesperson suggest accelerated progress: “We’re looking to move forward with procurement later this year.”

The council plans to build the track on a parcel of land adjacent to the pond at Coney Hill Park, located off Metz Way. The BMX track will serve as a fun and safe space for wheel-based activities, catering to riders of all ages and abilities—from beginners to seasoned professionals.

Designed to combine rolling jumps and skill-building turns, the track will teach riders how to maintain momentum, balance, and speed by using their arms and legs to “pump” their bike, skateboard, or scooter around the course.

When presenting the motion in 2021, Councillor Chambers emphasized the broader benefits: “This project helps keep children off the streets, builds community spirit, supports mental health and wellbeing, and advances health equity in one of Gloucester’s most deprived neighborhoods—ranked among the top 10 most deprived areas in England. I urge everyone to back this initiative.”
