The 19th series of The Great British Bake Off began on Monday, 23 September, featuring 12 bakers, including Shannon from Gloucestershire. During the first episode, Shannon unexpectedly left the tent midway through the showstopper challenge due to illness. Host Alison Hammond explained at the time that she was feeling unwell, and fellow contestants expressed their support for her wellbeing.
New judge Nigella Lawson, who joined the show this series, announced that in light of Shannon’s departure on medical grounds, no other contestant would be eliminated that episode to ensure fairness.
Shannon later spoke about her exit on the companion programme, Second Helpings, revealing she had suffered “a dicky tummy.” She also confirmed via Instagram that she would return to compete in the following episode. Sharing a glimpse of her watch party at home in Gloucester as the episode aired, she wrote: “I hope you enjoy it!”

On her Instagram Stories, Shannon expressed her excitement: “I actually cannot believe the first episode is out, I hope you all loved it so much. It was so intense, I literally was on the edge of my seat the whole time. Tune in next week – I’m back next week, so get ready for it. Very exciting!”
She praised the new judging panel, saying: “I love Nigella; she was really natural, which was lovely. The chemistry between her and Paul is great. And who doesn’t love Alison and Noel?”
Prior to the series, Shannon had teased her participation online, sharing a trailer and writing, “Words can’t describe how excited I am!” Fans responded enthusiastically, expressing their anticipation and support.
Upon her casting announcement, Shannon shared an emotional message, thanking her husband for encouraging her application. She described the experience as “the best of my life,” highlighting the ups and downs, friendships formed, and her pride at being part of the Bake Off family.
