GL1 Leisure Centre to Undergo Extensive Revamp Including New Gym and Soft Play Area

A major renovation of Gloucester’s GL1 Leisure Centre is scheduled to commence this September, marking a significant step in enhancing the city’s recreational amenities. Situated on Bruton Way, the project aims to modernise the leisure centre with a host of new and improved features.

The comprehensive upgrade will introduce a state-of-the-art gym, an expanded and improved soft play area, innovative water play attractions, a revamped reception hub, and modernised changing rooms equipped with the latest technology. These changes are designed to create a welcoming environment that encourages healthier and more active lifestyles for Gloucester residents.

One notable feature includes the reopening of the women-only gym next year, which will boast new flooring, upgraded air conditioning, and enhanced security measures to create a safe and comfortable space.

This refurbishment is part of Gloucester City Council’s ambitious £8 million investment strategy to revitalize leisure facilities citywide, including enhancements to both GL1 Leisure Centre and Oxstalls Sports Park. Completion of the project is expected by autumn 2027, promising a significantly improved experience for both locals and visitors.

Councillor Caroline Courtney (LD, Tuffley), who oversees leisure services at the council, emphasized the importance of accessible, high-quality leisure options. “GL1 has been overdue for modernization. These improvements will not only elevate the centre but will also provide a vibrant, inclusive space where our community can engage in physical activity and promote wellbeing,” she stated.

Freedom Leisure CEO Ivan Horsfall Turner expressed enthusiasm about the collaboration. “This renovation represents a major upgrade to one of Gloucester’s most vital community assets. The new facilities will enhance fitness opportunities and introduce exciting attractions for families, ensuring GL1 meets the evolving needs of our community for years to come,” he said.

Councillor Stephanie Chambers (C, Quedgeley Fieldcourt), leader of the Conservative opposition, also welcomed the £8 million investment. She highlighted the importance of retaining and upgrading the women-only gym, crediting Councillor Sajid Patel for advocating on behalf of residents. Chambers further underscored GL1’s role beyond fitness, noting its significance as a learning centre for children’s swimming and water safety – crucial skills given the risks associated with England’s open waters.

Recent upgrades at GL1 have already enhanced the venue’s energy efficiency through new lighting, introduced advanced indoor cycling equipment, and refurbished the pool floor. The centre expanded its fitness offerings with Gravity Reformer Pilates classes supported by specialised apparatus. The upcoming refurbishment phase will build on these advances, transforming GL1 into a premier hub for fitness, wellness, and family-friendly activities.

Design work is currently underway, with contractors preparing the site ahead of the full-scale refurbishment scheduled to begin this autumn.
