Unexplained changes in vision—such as blurred sight or double vision—may signal more than just a need for new glasses. According to experts, these symptoms can indicate serious underlying health conditions, including brain tumours. Optical Express is urging individuals to take any changes in their eyesight seriously and to schedule an eye examination promptly, as early detection can be lifesaving.
Brain tumours can place pressure on the optic nerve, often resulting in noticeable vision problems. In many cases, an optometrist may be the first healthcare professional to recognize such signs. The Brain Tumour Charity reports that one in three people with a brain tumour experience vision changes as an early symptom. Unfortunately, these warning signs are frequently overlooked since they can develop gradually.
Each year, over 12,000 people in the UK receive a brain tumour diagnosis, and early detection greatly improves treatment outcomes.

Dr. Stephen Hannan, Clinical Services Director at Optical Express, explains, “Your eyes offer important clues about your overall health, not just your eye condition. Persistent blurred or double vision, or a decline in peripheral vision, should always be thoroughly evaluated to rule out serious medical issues.”
“While these symptoms are often linked to common and minor eye problems, in rare cases they may signal increased pressure inside the brain. Routine eye exams enable optometrists to assess the optic nerve and identify abnormalities needing urgent medical referral. This is why regular eye tests are an essential part of protecting your overall health.”
Dr. Hannan also highlights the broader benefits of clear vision, noting, “Stable vision is crucial for wellbeing. For suitable patients, vision correction surgery can boost quality of life by enhancing confidence and independence, while reducing the risk of falls caused by poor or uncorrected eyesight.”
In recognition of Brain Tumour Awareness Month, Optical Express urges everyone to prioritize their eye health by attending eye examinations at least every two years—or sooner if they notice any changes in their vision.
