‘Get Seen This Month’ Warning: Don’t Ignore Changes in Your Vision

Unexpected changes in your vision—such as blurred sight, double vision, or loss of peripheral vision—should never be dismissed as just a need for new glasses. According to experts, these symptoms can sometimes indicate a serious health condition, including a brain tumour. Optical Express is urging anyone experiencing such symptoms to schedule an eye examination promptly, as early detection can be lifesaving.

Brain tumours can exert pressure on the optic nerve, leading to noticeable changes in eyesight. Often, optometrists are the first healthcare professionals to spot these warning signs. The Brain Tumour Charity reveals that one in three people with a brain tumour experience changes in vision early on. Unfortunately, these symptoms are frequently overlooked because they tend to develop gradually.

In the UK, more than 12,000 individuals are newly diagnosed with brain tumours annually. Early diagnosis can significantly improve treatment outcomes and survival rates.

Dr Stephen Hannan, Clinical Services Director at Optical Express, explains: “Your eyes can reveal vital clues about your overall health, not just eye health. Persistent blurred or double vision, or a reduction in peripheral vision, requires proper assessment to rule out urgent medical conditions.

“While often caused by minor eye issues, these symptoms can sometimes reflect increased pressure within the brain. Routine eye examinations enable optometrists to examine the optic nerve and detect abnormalities that may require referral for further medical evaluation. That’s why regular eye tests are crucial for protecting your overall health.

“Clear and stable vision is also essential for wellbeing. For suitable patients, vision correction surgery can enhance quality of life by boosting confidence and independence, and reducing risks of falls associated with poor or uncorrected vision."

In recognition of Brain Tumour Awareness Month, Optical Express is encouraging everyone to prioritise their eye health by attending eye exams at least every two years—or sooner if they notice any changes in their vision.
