George Skivington Highlights the Qualities That Led Gloucester to Sign Wales Star Dewi Lake

Wales international Dewi Lake is set to join Gloucester Rugby from the Ospreys ahead of the 2026/27 season, poised to fill the significant gap left by Jack Singleton’s unexpected and prolonged absence. Singleton, an England international, suffered a heart incident during training, casting uncertainty over his playing future.

Lake, a tough and tenacious hooker from Ogmore Vale, has accumulated over 70 appearances for the Ospreys across the United Rugby Championship, Challenge Cup, and Champions Cup. A proven leader, he has captained Wales on multiple occasions and will reunite with international teammate Jac Morgan at Kingsholm this summer.

His rugby journey began with Wales U20 in 2018, and he notably captained the side at the 2019 World Rugby U20 Championship, steering Wales to a memorable 8-7 victory over New Zealand. Although first called up to the senior Welsh squad in 2020, it was during the 2022 Six Nations that Lake made his debut against Ireland. Since then, he has earned 26 international caps, including participating in a historic win over the Springboks in South Africa and co-captaining Wales alongside Jac Morgan during the 2023 Rugby World Cup.

George Skivington, Gloucester’s director of rugby, praised Lake as “the epitome of a modern-day hooker — dominant at set piece and industrious around the park.” Skivington added, “He’s a gritty and abrasive player, exactly the type Gloucester fans love to see. With Dewi and Jac joining us, we’ve significantly strengthened our pack and are shaping up well for the 2026/27 season.”

Expressing his excitement, Lake said, “I had a great conversation with the club about their ambitions and how I can contribute, which really inspired me. I’ve always admired Gloucester’s style of play, which suits my strengths and how I like to play. The Gallagher Premiership is incredibly competitive, and I believe I’m at the right stage in my career to embrace this opportunity wholeheartedly.”
