George Skivington Explains Gloucester Rugby’s Re-signing of Callum Braley

Gloucester Rugby have re-signed former scrum-half Callum Braley on a short-term basis to help cover injuries within their squad. The 31-year-old, who previously made over 100 appearances for the Cherry and Whites between 2014 and 2020, brings valuable experience to the club during a crucial period.

After leaving Gloucester in 2020, Braley had stints with Benetton Rugby and Saracens before recently returning to Gloucestershire. Internationally, he has earned 15 caps playing for Italy from 2019 to 2022. Having trained with Gloucester in recent weeks, Braley has now officially been registered and is available for selection in the upcoming Premiership Rugby Cup match against Sale Sharks at Kingsholm on Friday.

Gloucester’s director of rugby, George Skivington, praised Braley’s initiative and utility. “Callum reached out to offer his support as a training partner and has been a great asset on and off the pitch. He combines extensive playing experience with burgeoning coaching skills, bringing an analytical approach to our sessions,” Skivington explained.

The club’s back line is currently stretched due to injuries and player absences. Skivington noted, “Mikey Austin is sidelined with a knock, Tomos Williams is representing Wales, and both Rhys Price and Rio Ebanks are gaining experience on loan. Calling on Callum gives us vital depth in the scrum-half position.”

Gloucester also welcomed back Caolan Englefield last week against Exeter Chiefs, marking his return from a shoulder injury sustained while playing for England A in November. Englefield’s reintroduction adds further options as the Cherry and Whites navigate a challenging fixture list.
