Monty Don, the beloved presenter of Gardeners' World, has touched the hearts of many after announcing the passing of one of his cherished dogs, Peggy. In a poignant Instagram post, Monty shared a photo of Peggy and wrote, “Peggy died yesterday. She was an old lady—a few weeks short of her 16th birthday—and went as she had lived, gently and without fuss.”
He described Peggy as “eccentric, quirky, infinitely gentle and loving,” and expressed how deeply she will be missed. Peggy has now been laid to rest in the coppice alongside other cherished dogs, Nigel and Nell.
Fans and followers quickly offered their condolences. Comments ranged from simple farewells such as “RIP dear Peggy,” to heartfelt messages expressing sympathy: “So sorry to hear this. You would have given her a wonderful life,” and “Dogs are such a special part of our lives.”

Monty also shares his life with two other dogs—golden retriever Ned, a frequent face on Gardeners' World, and Patti, who is rarely seen on the show. His devotion to his canine companions is well known, with previous dogs Nigel and Nellie having been beloved figures on the programme until their recent passings.
Nigel passed away in 2020, with Monty informing followers at the time: “I am very sorry to announce that Nigel has died. To the end he was happy, healthy and his usual calm, lovely self. But he was suddenly taken ill.” Nellie’s death followed in 2023, and Monty shared, “I remember her not with sadness but gratitude for the way she enriched my life.”
Monty’s love for dogs also shines through his writing. On his blog about designing dog-friendly gardens, he explained that dogs are a natural part of his garden life: “Wherever I am in the garden, I should be accompanied by a dog or two. It is their garden as much as mine or any other member of the family.”
He highlights that his dogs rarely damage the garden and enjoys watching them frolic along the paths. The coppice holds headstones for Beaufort, Red, Poppy, Barry, and the cats Stimpy and Blue, who have all left a permanent, loving imprint on Monty’s garden and life.
Monty Don’s sincere tribute to Peggy resonates with the universal bond between humans and their pets, reminding fans of the special place animals hold in their hearts and homes.
