Gardeners’ World’s Adam Frost Reveals Awkward Fan Encounters and His Wife’s Humorous Reactions

Gardeners' World presenter Adam Frost admits that, despite his confident on-screen persona, he often feels shy and awkward when meeting fans. The gardening expert revealed that his long-term wife, Sulina, doesn’t hesitate to “chuck him under the bus” during these moments, finding the situations hilariously entertaining.

Adam explained, “She thinks it’s really funny. When I’m off duty, the ‘cap goes on,’ and I’m not as confident as people might expect. I speak on TV and on stage, but in face-to-face encounters, I’m not great.”

He shared a particularly cringeworthy experience with a female fan at a show. The woman suggested he try doing audiobooks, and Adam replied, “I’m dyslexic, so it’s not really my thing.” The fan then complimented his voice, implying it was perfect for bedtime listening, leaving Adam both shocked and blushing. “I probably looked pale,” he said, laughing. “All I could manage was a weak, ‘Oh, that’s nice.’ I was quickening my pace as I walked away.”

Despite the occasional awkwardness, Adam’s wife finds these moments amusing rather than threatening. When asked about the strangest fan interaction, Adam recalled being romantically propositioned by women in supermarkets, which he found “rather bizarre” for a married man in his fifties with four children. “It’s charming to be recognized,” he mused, “but some of the things said to me would cause trouble if the roles were reversed! Luckily, my wife thinks it’s hilarious.”

Adam also reflected on the warmth he’s received from his fanbase, describing it as “incredible” and “humbling.” He didn’t anticipate such a strong following when he first appeared on television or launched his tour, which was so popular it had to be extended.

Gardeners' World continues to air on BBC Two on weekdays at 8pm, bringing gardening inspiration — and a little unexpected fan drama — into viewers’ homes.
