Gardeners' World Monty Don and the Untold Story of His Enduring Romance and Hardships

Monty Don, the cherished presenter of ‘Gardeners’ World,' is a familiar figure on British television, yet the woman by his side remains largely out of the public eye. For more than 40 years, Monty and his wife Sarah have shared a remarkable journey marked by love, upheaval, and unwavering commitment.

Their story began at Cambridge University, where Monty first met Sarah—who was then married to someone else. Reflecting on their initial encounter during a 2023 podcast, Monty described it as “an intense attraction” rather than love at first sight. Over several months, as Sarah’s husband was away on a field trip, their connection deepened in an innocent, platonic way. The decision to pursue a relationship came with heavy emotional turmoil; Sarah chose to end her marriage, leading to a painful and complicated period for all involved.

Monty recalls those early days as “an extremely difficult, unhappy, tormented set-up” due to the feelings of betrayal and anger from Sarah’s ex-husband. Nonetheless, their love persevered, culminating in their marriage in 1983 at Finsbury Registry Office, London. Monty proposed on a secluded Scottish island, and although they never had a honeymoon, the couple built a family together, raising three children: Adam, Tom, and Freya.

Their early marriage was tested further by the devastating 1987 financial crash, which obliterated their assets. Monty and Sarah lost their home, business, and possessions after the collapse of their joint jewellery venture. “For about two years, we literally had no money,” Monty recounted. “I was claiming the dole. We were severely in debt. It took me seven years to pay it all back.” Despite the hardship, the couple never declared bankruptcy and gradually rebuilt their lives.

Monty’s career flourished as he began writing for the Mail on Sunday and presenting gardening segments on television, eventually becoming the face of ‘Gardeners’ World' in 2003. Amid professional success, Monty also faced personal challenges, including struggling with Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD). It was Sarah’s tough love that prompted him to seek treatment after she gave him an ultimatum to address his debilitating bouts of depression. Monty turned from medication to light therapy, helping him regain balance.

Though Sarah remains seldom seen by the public, Monty often speaks of their bond with affection and respect. From overcoming heartache and financial ruin to managing mental health challenges, their story is one of enduring partnership behind the scenes of Britain’s favourite gardening show.

‘Gardeners’ World' continues to inspire audiences with Monty Don’s warm guidance every Friday at 8:00 pm on BBC Two.
