Gardeners' World Host Adam Frost Opens Up About Struggling with Fibromyalgia

Adam Frost, beloved presenter of BBC’s Gardeners’ World, has bravely shared his personal experience living with fibromyalgia, a chronic condition affecting approximately 2.5 million people in the UK. The 56-year-old horticulturist described the widespread pain, exhaustion, and numerous other symptoms that come with the disease, shedding light on a health issue that often remains misunderstood.

In an intimate interview with the Daily Mail’s Weekend magazine, Adam reflected on how plants and music have long been his refuge. “I worked out that I’ve used plants and music all my life as a way of escape,” he revealed. Every corner of his garden holds sentimental value, each section linked to cherished memories, from childhood adventures abroad to special connections with loved ones.

Adam, who co-hosts Gardeners’ World alongside Monty Don since 2016, recently presented highlights from this year’s Chelsea Flower Show with Sophie Raworth on BBC One. His passion for gardening has not only brought joy but has also been a crucial part of his mental health journey. He has openly spoken about overcoming a tough period of depression, when therapy and psychiatric support helped him find purpose. Reflecting on his psychiatrist’s advice, Adam shared: “He told me I’d be dead in 18 months if I retired… I thought, ‘You’re supposed to be helping me.’ But it was brilliant advice.”

His father’s saying, “Busy hands,” resonates deeply with Adam. “I’m a grafter, but I have a different mindset now. I get up to have a nice day. Why would I retire? Retire and do what? Garden? At least this way I get paid for it,” he explained.

Adam also opened up about recent family challenges, including his wife Sulina’s critical illness with sepsis, which required a lengthy hospital stay. Additionally, he recounted the heartache of supporting his 15-year-old daughter through self-harm and an eating disorder. During this stressful time, Adam himself caught Covid-19, which left him isolated and overwhelmed emotionally. “I was sitting in a corner bawling my eyes out,” he admitted candidly.

Through it all, Adam Frost’s story is one of resilience and hope, highlighting how passion and purpose can help individuals cope with both chronic illness and life’s hardships.
