Gabby Logan Opens Up About Daughter’s Heartbreaking Bullying Experience

Gabby Logan, the well-known BBC Sport presenter, has shared a deeply personal and heartbreaking story about her daughter Lois’s experience with bullying at school. Reflecting on the impact this had on her family, Gabby described feeling “devastated” upon learning the full extent of the challenges her daughter faced.

Lois began to show signs of distress around age 11, revealing to her mother a troubling social dynamic she encountered. During a trial day at a prospective new school, Lois asked a peer which girls she should avoid, only to hear a candid reply that the group she was placed with was actually the troublesome one.

Gabby recounted on her Mid.Point podcast: “My daughter was trying out a school she thought she might attend and asked, ‘Who are the girls that I should avoid?’ The girl responded, ‘My group.’ Hearing that self-awareness from an 11-year-old—that they recognized themselves as the ones causing problems—was remarkable but also saddening.”

Gabby explained that Lois had been “attracted to the sassy group” as a younger child, which led to complications and emotional struggles during her school years. “As a parent, I had no idea this was happening until she told me. It was devastating,” Gabby said, emphasizing how many parents can relate to the shock when they discover their child has been silently struggling.

Child psychologist Dr. Tara Proctor, featured on the same podcast, shed light on why children often hesitate to share their bullying experiences. Many kids fear their parents will overreact or “make a fuss,” which can sometimes discourage open communication.

Dr. Proctor advised parents to listen with empathy and caution. Rather than rushing to solve the problem immediately, parents should seek to understand their child’s perspective and emotional state first. She highlighted that young people rarely wish their parents had given them more advice; what they need most is support and understanding.

However, Dr. Proctor added that swift parental intervention is crucial if bullying becomes persistent and harmful. She recommended discussions around emotional experiences and the complexities of friendships, including understanding “on-off friends” whose attitudes may fluctuate unpredictably.

Aside from sharing this personal episode, Gabby also recently opened up about her family’s loss earlier this year when her father, celebrated Welsh football legend Terry Yorath, passed away. Gabby and her siblings paid tribute to their father’s gentle nature and remarkable football career, expressing their heartbreak and the comfort of knowing he has been reunited with their late brother.

Gabby, married to former rugby player Kenny Logan since 2001, is mother to twin children, Lois and Reuben, born in 2005. This candid conversation about parenting, bullying, and family resilience offers insightful reflections on the challenges faced behind closed doors.
