The future of Gloucester Rugby’s fly-half Ross Byrne has come under fresh scrutiny amid reports linking him with a possible return to Ireland.
Munster Rugby could look to Byrne as cover after their new Irish international, Jack Crowley, was ruled out until 2027 due to a serious lower limb vascular injury. Crowley, who has been sidelined since April, has undergone specialist assessments, with medical advice indicating he will not return to play until the new year.
Ross Byrne, a 22-cap Irish international, has struggled to secure a regular starting position at Gloucester since his move from Leinster in 2025. RugbyPass has reported that Munster may offer him a chance to return, given Crowley’s prolonged absence.

Despite this, sources within Munster suggest the province is more inclined to rely on their existing fly-half options. JJ Hanrahan remains fit, while promising talents like Ireland U20 playmakers Tom Wood and Charlie O’Shea are available. Additionally, new Australian signing Will Harrison is expected to bolster their options once he recovers from a pre-season knee injury.
In recent pre-season action, Hanrahan and Wood gained valuable playing time at fly-half during Munster’s 47-26 defeat away to La Rochelle.
Meanwhile, Gloucester face Bristol Bears this week in the Premiership Rugby Cup at Ashton Gate. Over the past year, young fly-half Charlie Atkinson has increasingly become the preferred choice in the position, limiting Byrne’s appearances. Byrne is reportedly Gloucester’s highest-paid player but has found himself struggling to make the matchday 23.
Byrne, entering the second year of a three-season contract, reportedly held discussions with French Top 14 club Perpignan about a summer move. However, the club opted instead to sign Italian international Paolo Garbisi from Toulon.
On the pitch, Byrne has faced challenges adapting to Gloucester attack coach James Lightfoot-Brown’s playing style, which requires fly-halves to operate flatter to the defensive line. Nevertheless, new scrum-half Dan Robson has praised Byrne’s experience and game knowledge, highlighting a positive rapport between the two.
Robson commented: “Ross is super experienced, he is so knowledgeable about the game, and we’ve had some really good chats. We know how each other plays a little bit. So for me, it’s been pretty easy building a relationship. It’s been pretty seamless, so hopefully, we can carry that on into the season.”
Robson also expressed optimism regarding his partnership with Atkinson, recalling their previous collaboration at Wasps before the club’s administration.
He said: “I played with Charlie quite a lot at Wasps when he was breaking through as a youngster, so we’ve got a really good relationship there.”
