Future of Former Chambers Pub in Gloucester City Centre Looks Promising

The former Chambers pub, a well-known eyesore in Gloucester city centre, may soon be revitalized as a restaurant, following encouraging signs from city council officials. Closed since the onset of the Covid-19 pandemic, this prime corner site at Market Parade has remained vacant and boarded up.

The Gloucester City Council has advertised the 3,500 sq ft property on a leasehold basis, attracting proposals including one envisioning a pub with a café, food service, and games area. However, that bid did not materialize into an agreement.

At the July 17 council meeting, opposition leader Stephanie Chambers pressed for clarity on the future of the building. She emphasized the need for a family-friendly establishment rather than a nightclub, expressing concern about an ongoing derelict presence deterring visitors to Kings Square.

Council leader Jeremy Hilton acknowledged ongoing negotiations with potential tenants but stressed the importance of timing. He explained the council aims to wait until nearby developments—the completion of the Forum and improvements to the public realm—are finished. These enhancements are expected to attract more foot traffic, making the location more appealing for dining and social spaces.

Mrs. Chambers reiterated the desire for a venue suitable for families, students, and a relaxed atmosphere similar to those found in continental Europe, rather than a late-night nightclub.

Mr. Hilton responded, hinting strongly that talks are close to securing a high-quality food and beverage outlet serving evening meals. “I can’t say much more until the legal processes are complete,” he noted, “but I think you’ll be happy to bring the kids along for an evening meal there soon.”

This suggests the Chambers pub site will soon shed its derelict status and become a welcoming destination for locals and visitors alike.
