Fundraiser Surpasses £425k for Dad Who Lost Family in Boxing Day Fire in Stroud

Tom Shearman, an officer with Gloucestershire Constabulary, has been overwhelmed by the incredible support following the tragic loss of his wife, two children, and beloved dog in a devastating Boxing Day house fire near Stroud.

On December 26, a fire swept through Tom’s home in Brimscombe, claiming the lives of his wife Fionnghuala “Nu” Shearman, their seven-year-old daughter Eve, their four-year-old son Ohner, and their dog Hutch. Despite Tom’s desperate efforts to rescue them, the intensity of the flames forced him to retreat.

In response to this heartbreaking tragedy, a GoFundMe campaign was launched on December 27. In just over a week, donations have surpassed £426,000, with contributions pouring in from local groups such as Minchinhampton RFC, Slimbridge Cygnets Youth Football Club, and the police union UNISON. The fundraiser is approaching its £450,000 target, reflecting the community’s profound compassion.

On New Year’s Day, Tom shared a heartfelt message on the fundraising page, expressing his overwhelming gratitude: “I have stared at my keypad for what seems like an eternity waiting for the words to appear. I have no way to thank any of you for the unbelievable out-of-this-world generosity that you have shown to me in the darkest of hours.”

He reflected on the profound impact of the tragedy: “My family had its very core, its very essence, ripped from it in the most violent way.” Despite the unbearable loss, Tom is committed to preserving the legacies of his wife and children. He plans to honor Nu’s passion for craft and design, support Eve’s love of books and writing, and continue Ohner’s compassionate spirit.

Tom concluded with a moving reminder: “Please all take every opportunity to hug your loved ones, tell them you love them. Because, as Paulo Coelho said, one day you will wake up and there won’t be any more time to do the things you want. Do it now."

He also expressed gratitude to the emergency services who bravely fought the fire and urged support for them as well. Floral tributes and messages of sympathy have been left at the site, with the family asking that further items be taken to Holy Trinity Church, Minchinhampton.

This overwhelming response showcases the strength and unity of the community in the face of unimaginable loss, standing with Tom Shearman as he begins to heal and honor his family’s memory.
