‘Fun and Inspirational’ Gloucester Headteacher Retires After 21 Years at Abbeymead Primary

After an inspiring 21-year journey, Julian Pass, the much-loved headteacher of Abbeymead Primary School in Gloucester, is set to retire this Friday, July 17. Since assuming the role in 2005, 61-year-old Mr. Pass has been a pivotal figure in the school’s transformation from a ‘good’ rating to achieving an ‘outstanding’ status in Ofsted inspections. The latest report praises Abbeymead as “a school for everyone,” highlighting the warm and nurturing relationships between staff and pupils that lie at the heart of its success.

Mr. Pass described leading Abbeymead as “one of the great privileges” of his life. His colleagues praise his leadership for its heart, integrity, and vision, while pupils fondly remember his fun spirit and unique costumes. From dressing as a rocket on Sports Day to enthusiastically joining school dinners, Mr. Pass has always been hands-on and engaged with the community.

Starting his headship at Abbeymead after moving from Hampshire, Mr. Pass has worked alongside co-headteacher Amy Coole and witnessed former pupils return as parents or staff, a testament to his lasting impact. His initiatives extended beyond the classroom, leading adventurous trips such as Snowdon expeditions and Okehampton residential visits, always encouraging pupils to embrace challenges and prepare “ready for life.”

Assistant Headteacher Kelly Tanner emphasizes, “The school’s wonderful reputation is largely thanks to Julian’s tireless work. His leadership has shaped Abbeymead into a happy, thriving community.” Year 1 teacher Meg Hooper shares how Mr. Pass’s passion inspired her own ambition to become a headteacher, while Year 2 teacher Chloe Gordelier reflects on his kindness, humour, and unwavering dedication.

Pupils also cherish their memories, with one recalling, “My favourite part of the day is seeing him and saying hello at the gate,” and another excitedly remembering when he dressed as a rocket to win the teacher’s race. Such moments capture the warmth and enthusiasm that defined his tenure.

As the school prepares to bid farewell in a special leavers’ assembly, Abbeymead Primary celebrates not just a headteacher, but a remarkable leader whose influence will resonate for years to come.
