After 21 years of dedicated leadership, Julian Pass, 61, is stepping down as headteacher of Abbeymead Primary School in Gloucester. Since taking the helm in 2005, Mr Pass has transformed the school from a good to an outstanding institution, earning praise for creating “warm and nurturing relationships” that place pupils and staff at the heart of its success.
Described by colleagues as “inspirational” and leading with “heart and integrity,” Mr Pass has become a cherished member of the school community. Pupils fondly remember his playful antics, like dressing up in creative costumes and actively engaging with students during everyday activities.
Before joining Abbeymead, Mr Pass served as headteacher at Scantabout Primary School in Hampshire. His impact at Abbeymead is so enduring that many former pupils have returned as parents or even staff members, a testament to the legacy he leaves behind.

His assistant headteacher, Kelly Tanner, applauds his tireless dedication and inspirational leadership, crediting him for shaping Abbeymead into the thriving, happy school it is today. Fellow teachers highlight his kindness, wisdom, and humor, noting the lasting impression he leaves on both pupils and staff.
Pupils themselves cherish moments like greeting him at the school gate or cheering him on as he raced in a rocket costume during Sports Day. Many appreciate the personal encouragement he has given, with some recalling his belief in their futures.
As the school year closes, Abbeymead Primary will honor Mr Pass with a leavers’ assembly on Friday, July 17—a fitting farewell to a headteacher who has truly made a difference.
