As the UK faces soaring temperatures, Gloucestershire schools are closing their doors on Friday, June 26, following an extended heatwave warning issued by the Met Office. The heatwave, which has already caused widespread disruption, is expected to bring temperatures peaking at 38°C in some regions, compounded by active thunderstorm and heat warnings nationwide.
This extreme weather event comes after a significant wildfire broke out in the Peak District on Thursday, the day the mercury climbed to a sweltering 36.7°C. Wales recorded its highest June temperature on record with 35.6°C in Cardiff’s Bute Park, while Scotland saw 31.2°C in Threave. Professor Stephen Belcher CBE, the Met Office chief scientist, highlighted the profound impact of human-induced climate change on making such heatwaves more frequent and severe.
He noted, “Temperatures like these in the UK during June are sobering and have far-reaching consequences beyond the heat stress risks to health. They affect transport, energy, water supplies, and various other sectors.”
