The Met Office has extended its heatwave warning across Gloucestershire, prompting a significant number of schools to announce closures for Friday, June 26. This extension comes as the UK braces for another day of soaring temperatures, with some areas expected to reach extreme highs of 38°C.
The current heatwave has made its impact felt nationwide, with a record-breaking 36.7°C recorded in the Peak District on Thursday and Wales experiencing its warmest June temperature ever, 35.6°C at Cardiff’s Bute Park. Scotland is not exempt, with temperatures climbing to 31.2°C in Threave.
Professor Stephen Belcher CBE, Chief Scientist at the Met Office, emphasised the severity of the situation: “The heatwave this week is a significant weather event, marked by a Red Extreme Heat warning. Human-induced climate change has increased the frequency and intensity of such events. Temperatures of this magnitude in the UK during June serve as a stark reminder of climate change’s implications for public health and critical infrastructure.”
