The suspension of home birth services across Gloucestershire has been extended until the autumn, fueling ongoing frustration among expectant mothers and maternity campaigners. Initially paused in November due to staff-raised safety concerns, Gloucestershire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust recently announced that while significant progress has been made, more work is required to ensure the service can reopen safely.
This extension has drawn sharp criticism from groups like the Gloucestershire Maternity Action Group (GMAG), who argue that the prolonged suspension infringes on women’s rights and further undermines community maternity care. GMAG had already initiated legal proceedings challenging the suspension but paused the action in good faith during trust discussions. Emma Gleave, representing GMAG, voiced her concerns: “The suspension now effectively extends to all community births, implemented without consultation and lacking a clear plan for safe reinstatement. Women’s legal rights to birth choice cannot be indefinitely sidelined.”
Hospital officials acknowledge the impact this suspension has on families who had hoped to give birth at home, describing the situation as deeply frustrating. In a statement, they expressed regret but emphasized the priority of safety: “While we have made good progress, the home birth service will remain suspended until autumn. We thank women, birthing people, and our maternity staff for their patience during this challenging time.”

A trust spokesperson also noted changing trends in maternity care, with an increase in hospital births over recent years. “We need to modernize our approach to offer a safe and equitable range of choices countywide,” they said. “Our goal remains to provide safe and accessible maternity services for all women in Gloucestershire, no matter where they live.”
As the autumn approaches, the community awaits a clear and actionable plan to restore home birth services, balancing safety with the birth choices women deserve.
