A renewed proposal seeks to demolish Gloucester’s only 11-storey tower block, Clapham Court on Alvin Street, and replace it with a new development of family homes and community facilities. The aging building, over 60 years old, has long been considered outdated and no longer meets modern housing needs.
Gloucester City Homes (GCH), the owner of Clapham Court, aims to build a mix of one, two, three, and four-bedroom homes, complete with parking spaces, a pharmacy, and a new play area to serve local residents. The plan reflects a commitment to improving housing quality while respecting the conservation area’s character.
To gather public feedback ahead of a formal planning application, GCH will hold a consultation event at Clapham Court on Tuesday, July 15, from 3 pm to 7 pm. Guy Stenson, GCH Chief Executive, emphasized the importance of community involvement: “Clapham Court no longer meets current housing demand. Our goal is to deliver better quality homes that enhance the neighborhood’s appearance and living conditions.”

This latest submission follows a December 2024 planning refusal of an earlier proposal that featured 36 homes. Concerns raised included parking availability and layout design. The revised plan addresses these issues by reducing the number of homes and including 21 parking spaces.
“Many families in Gloucester struggle to find affordable, suitable housing,” said Stenson. “By creating these new social homes, we can help people establish roots nearby their support networks and reduce reliance on temporary accommodation. We remain committed to collaborating with the council, residents, and stakeholders to address concerns and deliver homes that improve lives in Kingsholm.”
