Four Foods That Could Shorten Your Lifespan, According to a Heart Surgeon

Dr. Jeremy London, a board-certified cardiovascular surgeon with over 25 years of experience, has identified four foods that are “proven to shorten your lifespan.” Sharing his insights on social media, Dr. London emphasizes how certain commonly consumed items can negatively impact longevity and overall health.

In his viral videos, Dr. London highlights the following four culprits:

  1. Sugary Soft Drinks: Also known as sodas or fizzy drinks, these beverages are “empty calories” that never satisfy hunger. Dr. London famously calls them “liquid death,” cautioning, “Just don’t drink them. Period.” He explains they pack a high-calorie punch that people often overlook, contributing to metabolic and cardiovascular diseases.

  1. Alcohol: Classified as a class one carcinogen by the World Health Organization (WHO), alcohol consumption is strongly linked to cancer risk. Experts like Dr. Ernest Hawk of MD Anderson Cancer Center stress there is no safe alcohol level when it comes to cancer.

  2. Processed Meats: Processed meats—such as cured, salted, or smoked pork and beef—are also deemed carcinogenic by the WHO. Institutions like Cancer Research UK confirm the direct cancer-causing link with processed meats, putting them in the same risk category as tobacco and alcohol.

  3. Excess Saturated Fats: This category usually includes high-fat meats, butter, and full-fat dairy products. While some scientists, like Prof. Sarah Berry from King’s College London, argue that dairy’s saturated fat may not increase heart disease risk, ultra-processed foods rich in saturated fats, sugars, and salt show clear associations with higher disease burden.

Dr. London advises not complete avoidance but moderation. Striving to eat healthily 80% of the time can significantly reduce these harmful effects. “What you want to avoid is having any or all of these things foundational in your nutritional plan,” he says.

The World Health Organization defines processed meats as those transformed through salting, curing, fermentation, or smoking to enhance flavour or preservation. Examples include sausage, bacon, ham, and deli meats.

Health experts continue to warn that regular consumption of sugary drinks, processed meats, alcohol, and excess saturated fats increases the risk for cancer, metabolic, and cardiovascular diseases. Moderating these foods supports a longer, healthier life.
