Former Officer Who Praised Use of Force Would Have Been Dismissed, States Police

A former Metropolitan Police officer, PC Peter Greaves, who was secretly filmed expressing that he enjoyed using force against detainees, would have faced immediate dismissal if he had not already resigned, according to temporary Chief Constable Maggie Blyth.

The footage, recorded by Panorama at Charing Cross Police Station in November 2024, revealed disturbing instances of racism, Islamophobia, and misogyny within the Met. PC Greaves, caught on a hidden camera, also made shocking remarks about breaking the fingers of detainees who refused to provide fingerprints.

After being vetted under the College of Policing’s Authorised Professional Practice and Vetting Code of Practice, PC Greaves transferred to Gloucestershire Constabulary in March 2025 but resigned in November 2025.

Following an Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) investigation, an accelerated misconduct hearing was conducted on January 9. Temporary Chief Constable Blyth determined that PC Greaves’ conduct breached professional standards related to discreditable behaviour. She affirmed that he would have been dismissed without notice if still serving.

In response, PC Greaves’ name has been added to the Police Barred List, maintained by the College of Policing, preventing any future re-employment within police forces or related agencies.

Chief Constable Blyth commented, “While there is no evidence that PC Greaves physically harmed any members of the public, his comments were deeply troubling and have seriously damaged public trust in policing.”

So far, the Metropolitan Police has dismissed seven officers featured in the Panorama documentary. Further hearings are planned, with ongoing IOPC investigations into all related allegations at Charing Cross Police Station.
