England’s women’s cricket team has bolstered its coaching lineup with the appointment of former Gloucestershire CCC left-arm spinner Tom Smith as their spin-bowling coach for the upcoming summer season.
Smith, now 38, brings nearly two decades of professional playing experience, having been a crucial figure in Gloucestershire’s white-ball successes, including Royal London One Day Cup and Vitality Blast victories. Transitioning seamlessly from player to coach, Smith began his coaching journey with Gloucestershire and Birmingham Phoenix women before stepping up to the national setup.
Joining Charlotte Edwards’ coaching staff, Smith will focus on nurturing England’s talented left-arm spinners, such as Sophie Ecclestone, Linsey Smith, Tilly Corteen-Coleman, and Charis Pavely. Additionally, he will work closely with spin-bowling all-rounders Charlie Dean, Alice Capsey, and Sarah Glenn, enhancing their skills ahead of a demanding summer schedule.

Edwards expressed confidence in Smith’s appointment: “I’m delighted Tom is joining us after a professional playing career spanning nearly 20 years, most notably at Gloucestershire, before moving into coaching. Tom is hugely respected in the game and was a vastly experienced white-ball bowler who will no doubt share some of his great knowledge.”
Smith shared his enthusiasm: “The opportunity is an amazing one, and I’m incredibly excited to get started. It’s shaping up to be a brilliant summer, with a home World Cup on the horizon.”
England’s summer agenda features white-ball series against New Zealand and India, culminating in the Women’s T20 World Cup starting June 12. Smith’s expertise is expected to play a key role in preparing the team for these high-profile contests.
Reflecting on his time at Gloucestershire, Smith expressed gratitude: “I want to thank all the players, staff, and supporters who have given incredible support throughout my time at Gloucestershire. It’s been a really special journey, and the warmth and backing from everyone will never be forgotten.”
Gloucestershire director of cricket Jon Lewis praised Smith’s contributions: “It’s an honour to represent or coach your country, and we’re incredibly proud of Tom. He’s made a fantastic start to his coaching career and has been a brilliant servant to the club. While we’re disappointed to lose him now, we look forward to supporting him and welcoming him for England games this summer.”
Smith will remain involved with Gloucestershire through their opening Championship game against Middlesex on Good Friday. His final day with the county is scheduled to coincide with their first home match of the season against Durham on April 10.
