Graham Terrett, a cherished figure in Gloucester’s sporting and community circles, is celebrating his 100th birthday today, June 16. Born and raised in the city, Mr. Terrett has led a remarkable life filled with cricket, football, military service, and a strong connection to his local community. His fondness for staying active continues, as he celebrates this milestone surrounded by family, friends, and his Pilates class.
Born at home on Stratton Road in Gloucester in 1925, Graham was an only child whose parents often said he was “once seen, never forgotten.” He began his education at Derby Road Infants School and later attended the Gloucester Cathedral School Choir before earning a place at Kings School, where he studied until age 15.
After leaving school in 1940, Graham started working as a junior wages clerk at William Gardener’s engineers. During this time, he developed a passion for both cricket and football. He played for Gloucestershire County Cricket during World War II, sharing the field with legends like Wally Hammond and Tom Goddard. Additionally, he played football for Gloucester City AFC, a sport that inspired him to quit smoking.

In 1942, Graham joined the Royal Air Force and served as a bomber pilot during the war, flying missions over Germany, France, and Burma. His postings included RAF Grimsby with the 200 Squadron, and after the war ended, he served two more years in various RAF positions before demobilizing in 1947.
Returning to civilian life, Graham dedicated 21 years to William Gardener’s as an accountant, retiring in 1990. Alongside his professional life, he married Eileen Drew in 1961. The couple enjoyed nearly five decades of marriage, traveling frequently on cruises and sharing a close bond until Eileen’s passing in 2008. Their adopted daughter Diane, sadly, passed away at a young age.
Despite facing personal loss, Graham remains vibrant and engaged with life. He credits his longevity to staying active and socially involved, attending a Pilates group, traveling, and enjoying regular lunches with family and neighbors. His story is a testament to resilience, community spirit, and a lifelong commitment to fitness and friendship.
