Cameron Burgess, the former Cheltenham Town defender, made an impressive World Cup debut as Australia stunned Turkey with a 2-0 victory over the weekend. The Socceroos claimed only their fifth-ever World Cup win thanks to goals by Nestory Irankunda and Connor Metcalfe, scored in each half.
Turkey dominated possession with 72% and unleashed 30 shots, but they were repeatedly thwarted by a resolute Australian defense anchored by Burgess, who currently plays for Swansea City. The 30-year-old defender has now earned 28 caps for Australia since making his senior debut against Mexico in 2023.
Burgess’s journey to the global stage began during his loan at Cheltenham Town from Fulham in January 2016. He was instrumental in Cheltenham’s National League title-winning campaign, making 17 appearances in the latter half of the season. Having recently returned from international duty with Australia’s Under-23 team, Burgess impressed early on with Cheltenham, debuting in a commanding 4-1 victory over Bromley alongside Daniel Parslow in central defense.

Born in Aberdeen, Burgess has enjoyed a varied career across English football, including spells at Scunthorpe United, Accrington Stanley, Ipswich Town, as well as loan periods at Oldham Athletic, Bury, and Salford City. He made 18 Premier League appearances during the 2024/25 season before signing a three-year contract with Championship side Swansea last summer.
In Group D action, co-hosts USA dominated Paraguay 4-1, setting up a crucial match between Australia and the United States on June 19. Burgess’s World Cup involvement continues to highlight the pathway from lower league football at Cheltenham to the world’s biggest footballing stage.
Notably, other former Cheltenham players who have appeared at World Cup finals include Australian Oliver Bozanic in 2014 and Welsh internationals Joe Rodon and Joe Morrell, who both featured in the 2022 tournament.
