Derry Brownson, the keyboardist and founding member of the 1990s band EMF, has passed away at the age of 55 after battling a brain tumour.
Born in 1971 in the Forest of Dean, Brownson played a pivotal role in the Gloucestershire alt-rock group that rose to international fame with their hit single “Unbelievable”. Released in 1990, the track reached number three on the UK charts and remains one of the most iconic songs of the decade.
Brownson met his bandmates James Atkin (vocals), Mark Decloedt (drums), and Zac Foley (bass) while at school in the Forest of Dean. Together they formed EMF, a name derived from “Epsom Mad Funkers”, a term coined by a New Musical Express writer to describe fans of the band New Order.

After performing just four gigs, EMF was signed by EMI. Within six months, they achieved global success with “Unbelievable”.
News of Brownson’s death was met with heartfelt tributes from his bandmates and peers. A statement from EMF read: “Late last night we began to hear the devastating news that we have lost our Brother In Arms, Derry Brownson. We are shattered. The only comfort is that Derry was able to join us on stage a few times just months ago. Nothing will ever be the same without our bandmate and friend. Fly high, brother Derry.”
The Mirror reported that Brownson had been undergoing treatment for a brain tumour.
EMF recently announced they had completed recording a new 14-song album earlier this summer, marking a significant moment for the band.
Tributes also came from fellow musicians. Ash’s Tim Wheeler expressed: “So sorry for your loss, rest in peace Derry, sending love.” Guitarist and writer Will Crewdson added: “Lots of love and strength to you guys. Very sorry to hear.” The band Dictator shared: “We’re very sorry to hear, team EMF. Thoughts are with you all and your loved ones.”
