Forest of Dean Musician and EMF Founding Member Derry Brownson Dies After Brain Tumour Battle

Derry Brownson, keyboardist and founding member of the 1990s band EMF, has died at the age of 55, following a battle with a brain tumour. Brownson, originally from the Forest of Dean, was part of the group behind the worldwide hit “Unbelievable,” which reached number three on the UK charts in 1990.

Bandmates paid tribute to Brownson, saying in a statement: “Late last night we started to hear the news that we have lost our Brother In Arms, Derry Brownson. We are devastated. The only solace we can find is that we are eternally grateful Derry was able to join us on stage a couple of times just a few short months back. Nothing will ever be the same again without our bandmate and friend. Fly high, brother Derry.”

Brownson was diagnosed with a brain tumour and was undergoing treatment prior to his passing. Born in 1971, he was an integral member of the Gloucestershire alt-rock band EMF, remaining their keyboardist and sample player throughout their rise to fame in the 1990s.

He met fellow band members James Atkin (singer), Mark Decloedt (drummer), and Zac Foley (bassist) during their school years in the Forest of Dean. Together, they formed EMF-an acronym for “Epsom Mad Funkers,” a term reportedly coined by a New Musical Express writer for fans of the band New Order.

After only four live performances, EMF secured a record deal with EMI. Within six months, their single “Unbelievable” became a global hit and remains recognised as one of the 1990s' defining songs.

Brownson’s death coincides with recent news that EMF completed recording a new 14-track album earlier this summer.

Tributes have poured in from fellow musicians, including Ash’s Tim Wheeler, who said: “So sorry for your loss, rest in peace Derry, sending love.” Guitarist and writer Will Crewdson also expressed his condolences: “Lots of love and strength to you guys. Very sorry to hear.” The band Dictator added: “We’re very sorry to hear, team EMF. Thoughts are with you all and your loved ones.”
