Forest Green Rovers Suffer First Home League Defeat but Secure Play-Off Place

Despite a disappointing 3-2 loss against Gateshead in the National League, Forest Green Rovers manager Steve Cotterill commended his team’s resilience and expressed confidence in their play-off prospects.

The defeat marked Rovers' first home loss this season, with Jovan Malcom scoring twice and Liam Humbles adding to Gateshead’s tally before a late surge from the home team, resulting in an own goal and a stoppage-time strike by Christian Doidge.

Cotterill acknowledged his team’s strong start and emphasized the importance of maintaining their performance, expressing disappointment over losing their unbeaten home record. However, he remained optimistic about the team’s potential in the upcoming play-offs.

Despite the setback, Cotterill praised his players' efforts and pledged his ongoing support, albeit noting areas for improvement in the dressing room.

Malcolm’s early goal set the tone for Gateshead’s dominance, with the manager insisting that Rovers were the superior side for most of the game. Despite the challenging loss, Cotterill highlighted the potential impact of counter-attacks and stressed the need to stay vigilant.

The manager acknowledged Rovers' missed opportunities, including a denied penalty claim, while emphasizing the team’s determination to mount a comeback. He also underlined the significance of securing a play-off spot and expressed the team’s commitment to remaining in the top three positions.

Cotterill refrained from dwelling on the refereeing decisions and instead focused on the team’s performance, acknowledging the competitive nature of the game.
