Forest Green Rovers Faces Backlash After Axing Women’s Team

Forest Green Rovers have announced that they will not field a women’s team for the 2026/27 season, sparking widespread disappointment among supporters. The Green Devils' women’s squad had an impressive run last season, finishing second in the South West Regional Women’s Football League Premier Division and narrowly missing promotion to the fourth tier by just one point behind Torquay United.

However, on Tuesday morning, the club confirmed its decision to withdraw from the women’s competition next season. Their focus will instead be on “strengthening the club” and achieving the goal of returning the men’s team to the English Football League (EFL).

In an official statement, Forest Green Rovers stressed that this is not a permanent farewell to women’s football at the club. They expressed hopes to reinstate the women’s program in the future when conditions are favorable and a sustainable, long-term structure can be built.

The club also revealed that talks with Hartpury University about a potential partnership had broken down, eliminating the possibility of a joint team. Consequently, Forest Green will also end their involvement with Hartpury’s Elite Training Centre for girls aged 9 to 16. They pledged continued support for Hartpury Women FC, who will take the program forward independently.

Despite the club’s explanations, fans have voiced harsh criticism on social media. Twitter users described the decision as “horrendous” and “absolutely horrified,” lamenting the loss of opportunities for female players. Other supporters expressed frustration over the timing, highlighting that the club had also recently cut its youth academy, compounding concerns for the club’s future inclusivity and commitment to women’s football.

On Facebook, one follower called the club a “joke,” criticizing the sudden cancellation of all girls’ youth football trials after other teams had finalized their line-ups, leaving many young players without clubs. Another fan described the news as “absolutely devastating,” citing the short notice given to players to find new teams.

The backlash underscores the growing importance of women’s football and the disappointment felt when clubs step away from supporting female athletes. Many fear this setback could contribute to a decline in opportunities and growth for the women’s game locally.
