Forest Green Rovers have suffered a major setback as summer signing Emeka Obi is set to miss the remainder of the season due to an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury. The 25-year-old central defender sustained the injury during Saturday’s thrilling 3-2 National League opening-day victory against FC Halifax Town.
Manager Robbie Savage revealed that Obi is expected to be sidelined for six to nine months following surgery and rehabilitation. “It’s not good news, our worst fears have come to fruition, and it’s going to be six to nine months,” Savage stated. “It’s devastating for Emeka; he’s gutted as we are, especially after a promising start to his career at Forest Green.”
Obi, who joined Forest Green from Kidderminster Harriers, has previously played for clubs including Bury, Liverpool, Wigan Athletic, and AFC Fylde. Following the diagnosis, he will imminently undergo an operation before commencing his recovery.

Savage expressed confidence in Obi’s ability to return stronger: “Emeka will come back stronger. Look at Sean Etaluku, who missed large parts of last season but returned fitter and stronger. Emeka is at a brilliant club that cares deeply for its players. We will ensure he is well supported mentally and physically through this challenging time.”
The injury also leaves Forest Green short in central defence. With the departure of Laurent Mendy to Hearts, and other summer exits including Jordan Moore-Taylor and Ryan Inniss, the squad currently features Obi, Kyle Ajayi, Welsh prospect Gabe Kircough, and loan signing Filozofe Mabete, who scored on his debut last weekend.
In Obi’s absence, Tate Campbell filled in as centre-back during the recent game. Savage indicated that while Campbell can cover the position, the club is actively seeking a loan signing to reinforce the defence. “We like to have two players in every position and prefer four centre-backs in a back four system,” Savage explained. “We’ve been in discussions with multiple clubs, including those in the Premier League and Championship, exploring loan possibilities. As yet, there’s no concrete update to share.”
The club and supporters will be hoping for a smooth recovery for Obi and a swift addition to shore up the defensive line as Forest Green continue their campaign.
