A recent flood at Cheltenham General Hospital has caused significant disruption, leading to the cancellation of scheduled medical scans. The flooding, which occurred due to equipment failure in a plant room, forced the closure of the hospital’s Radiopharmacy facility while damage is assessed and repairs are made.
Patients expecting scans this week were notified at the last minute that their appointments had to be postponed. One affected individual awaiting a nuclear medicine scan expressed frustration at the short notice and lack of alternatives, stating they were not offered the option to transfer to another hospital on the day of their appointment. The patient, who preferred to remain anonymous, shared:
“I received a call on May 15 to say my nuclear medicine scan was cancelled because of flooding in the pharmaceutical area, so they couldn’t provide nuclear medicine. I’m disappointed that while I was told a new date will be arranged, there was no clear timeline. I’ve waited three months, took time off work, and prepared extensively for this scan. I would have been willing to wait all day if it meant I could still have the procedure somewhere else.”

The Gloucestershire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust has issued an apology for the inconvenience caused and confirmed that hospital teams worked overnight to manage the flooding. A spokesperson explained:
“An equipment failure caused flooding in a plant room early on May 15. Our Estates Team responded quickly, working through the night to clear the water and ensure safety. The Radiopharmacy remains closed until we fully assess the damage, so the reopening date is currently unknown. We are collaborating with another hospital to maintain critical diagnostic imaging services and ensure cancer treatments continue without interruption. We appreciate everyone’s support and apologise for any disruption.”
Patients affected by the cancellations are being contacted to reschedule their appointments as soon as possible, with priority given to urgent cases.
