Early this morning, five men were arrested at gunpoint near RAF Fairford following reports of a potential bomb plot. Armed police detained the suspects in the Whelford area after receiving information about three suspicious vehicles heading towards the airbase at approximately 12:45am.
The arrests were made under suspicion of offences related to the Explosives Act, with subsequent charges concerning preparation of a terrorist act. A photograph circulated online, purporting to show the suspects sat on the ground surrounded by armed officers. Although the image has not been independently verified, experts suggest it is authentic, and it was reportedly shared within a local village WhatsApp group before gaining wider attention on social media and news outlets.
The BBC reported that the photograph was geolocated to a position about 350 metres from Crash Gate 6A, close to the runway access at RAF Fairford. The incident prompted the evacuation of around 85 households in Whelford, some of whom may need to remain away from their homes overnight while security checks continue.

Prime Minister Andy Burnham expressed his concern for the local community, thanking Gloucestershire Police, Counter Terrorism Policing, and the Armed Forces for their efforts in maintaining public safety. He urged the public to avoid speculation as the investigation is ongoing.
Defence Secretary Wes Streeting declined to comment on operational details but confirmed close cooperation with US counterparts, particularly with Pete Hegseth, the US Secretary of the Department of Veterans Affairs, highlighting the strategic importance of RAF Fairford to both the UK and the US. Streeting refrained from discussing the motives behind the arrests, emphasising the need for caution and responsibility.
Former US President Donald Trump praised the collaborative efforts between US and UK authorities, suggesting the suspects had been under investigation and were planning significant attacks. However, some of his comments appeared to conflict with official statements from the police.
Authorities continue to investigate the incident, and residents are advised to follow official guidance as the situation develops.
