Adrian Graham, a 39-year-old Independent Councillor, has made history as Gloucester’s first black mayor since the role was established 798 years ago. Representing Matson, Robinswood, and White City, Graham becomes the city’s 546th mayor and its first Independent to hold the position.
Known also for his work as a DJ and former pub landlord, Graham expressed his deep honor at the council meeting held on May 18, where his nomination was supported by both Independent and Liberal Democrat colleagues. “I never expected to become a councillor, let alone mayor,” he said, describing himself as “just a normal guy, a father, a husband, someone who loves creating nostalgic moments through music.”
Cllr Alastair Chambers hailed Graham’s appointment as a historic milestone that reflects Gloucester’s diversity and the strength of its community-led leadership. Born in Peterborough, Graham moved to Gloucester at the age of four. He credits the city for shaping his life, attending local schools and developing a strong work ethic through various roles including youth support worker and registered care services manager.

His past experience as a local event organizer and pub landlord helped foster community spirit, making his path to mayoral office unique—transitioning from hosting reggae dancehall nights to serving in civic duty.
Graham shared poignant memories of growing up in Gloucester, recalling the safety and community his mother’s resilience provided. After a brief period living and working in London, he returned home feeling a renewed connection. “Gloucester is my home. It’s not about the chain or the ceremony—it’s about the people who make this city what it is,” he emphasized.
Though a quieter voice in politics, Graham believes in listening rather than shouting, using empathy and inclusivity to build unity. “I have the heart to bring people together and build on what already makes this city great,” he said.
In his role as mayor, Graham has chosen to support two charities: The Venture in White City and Great Ormond Street Hospital. He aims to highlight the efforts of local volunteers and charities working quietly behind the scenes.
With his wife Kirsty and mother by his side, Mayor Adrian Graham is committed to showcasing the beauty, strength, and heart of Gloucester throughout his term. His historic election inspires hope and celebration across the city, marking a new chapter of diversity and community leadership.
