Fern Britton, the beloved television presenter known for BBC Breakfast, Celebrity Big Brother, Ready Steady Cook, and This Morning, has shared insights into her inspiring weight loss journey. At 68, Fern opened up on the Postcards From Midlife podcast about how a simple but powerful change to her diet helped her shed pounds and feel healthier than ever.
Recognizing the negative impact of excessive snacking and sugar consumption on her health, Fern took decisive steps to reduce her sugar intake. “I realised the sugar intake. I’m addicted to sugar and, funnily enough, if you’re not eating donuts, biscuits, cake, jam, you know… it makes you feel a lot better,” she explained. Her sensitivity to sweetness has increased to the point where sugary foods now taste overwhelmingly sweet, much like her decreased tolerance for cigarette smoke.
Alongside cutting sugar, Fern adjusted her daily eating habits. She described a typical morning meal of toasted wholemeal bread topped with peanut butter and sliced banana, paired with tea – a combination that keeps her energized throughout the day. She emphasized the importance of eggs for staying full longer, preferring them over porridge, which she finds less satisfying.

Her approach remains balanced rather than restrictive. Butter remains a staple in her diet, reflecting her belief that nothing should be forbidden except sugar. Complementing her nutritional changes, Fern incorporates regular exercise, including running with a couch-to-5k program and strength training with weights at home.
Fern’s commitment to fitness and nutrition has led to noticeable improvements in her strength and overall wellbeing, as she previously shared with Hello! magazine. “My legs and arms are much stronger; my tummy is much stronger after four children and everything else my body’s been through,” she affirmed.
Her story is a testament to how mindful dietary changes and consistent exercise can foster lasting health benefits at any age.
