Father’s ‘Tennis Injury’ Revealed Shocking Diagnosis

Richard Driver, a retired IT consultant from Norfolk, initially brushed off his back and stomach pain as a result of playing tennis with his son Rory. Months later, a scan revealed a large tumor in his abdomen, leading to a diagnosis of stage three dedifferentiated liposarcoma - a rare cancer originating in fat cells. Urgent surgery removed the 26cm tumor, along with several organs. Despite battling sepsis, a heart attack, and a collapsed lung, Richard was declared “cancer-free” in May 2024. His daughter Zoe’s fundraising efforts for Sarcoma UK aim to support research and raise awareness of the disease.

Richard and his family had initially attributed his back and stomach pain to aging and muscle strain from playing tennis with his son. However, as the discomfort persisted, a visit to the doctor led to the shocking discovery of the rugby ball-sized tumor.

Following a challenging 13-hour surgery to remove the tumor and affected organs, Richard faced severe complications but ultimately triumphed over the life-threatening ordeal.

Despite the high risk of recurrence, Richard remains under constant medical vigilance. Zoe’s fundraising efforts for Sarcoma UK are a testament to the family’s determination to raise awareness and support research on this rare form of cancer.

Richard’s post-recovery journey has been marked by gradual strength regain, with his daughter Zoe preparing to run the London Marathon in 2025 to raise funds for Sarcoma UK.
