The family of Hamid Erfani, a man fatally stabbed in a Cheltenham alleyway, have described the profound impact of their loss following the sentencing of the teenage perpetrator.
The 15-year-old boy responsible for the attack was convicted of murder by a jury at Bristol Crown Court on 27 July. The fatal stabbing occurred on the afternoon of 16 December 2025 in an alleyway between Larput Place and St Paul’s Road in Cheltenham.
Yesterday, the youth, whose identity remains protected due to his age, was sentenced to life imprisonment with a minimum term of 16 years at Bristol Crown Court.

Evidence presented during the trial revealed that the defendant and an 18-year-old accomplice, Paddy Maher-then 17-had followed Mr Erfani into the alley intending to rob him. After seizing his money, mobile phone, and drugs, the younger boy inflicted a fatal stab wound, despite efforts by passers-by and medical personnel to save Mr Erfani’s life.
A statement from Mr Erfani’s family, read in court, conveyed their immense grief and ongoing psychological distress caused by his death. They expressed that “the loss of Hamid has had a devastating emotional and psychological impact on our family,” describing experiences of severe grief, trauma, anxiety, depression, and sleeping difficulties.
The investigation was led by Gloucestershire Constabulary’s Major Crime Investigation Team, who traced, arrested, and charged both boys. The 15-year-old had previously admitted to robbery and possession of a bladed article, as had Maher.
Court details established that the two teenagers, both armed with knives, targeted Mr Erfani following awareness of a drug deal in the area. They demanded his possessions at knifepoint; Mr Erfani complied peacefully. However, subsequently, the younger youth stabbed him once in the chest, causing fatal injuries.
After the attack, the pair fled and concealed their weapons. The murder weapon was later recovered near The Leisure at Cheltenham on Tommy Taylors Lane.
During sentencing, Honourable Mrs Justice Kate Brunner described the stabbing as “a deliberate act done for no reason that anyone could see-an act of brutality to reinforce that [the boy] was not one to be messed with.” She highlighted the severity of the injury, noting the knife pierced the heart.
Mrs Justice Brunner acknowledged the victim as “a beloved son, family member, and friend,” emphasising the profound loss felt by many. She stated that the defendant’s actions shattered the lives of those who loved Mr Erfani and that the boy must bear the responsibility of his actions indefinitely.
The judge also recognised the defendant’s difficult background, citing exposure to domestic violence, neglect, substance misuse in his family, mental health issues, and experiences of modern slavery linked to criminal exploitation. She noted his disrupted education and social care involvement since before birth, observing how such circumstances influenced his decisions.
Despite the gravity of the crime, Mrs Justice Brunner remarked on the positive attributes observed in the youth since his incarceration, including his politeness, thoughtfulness, educational progress, maturity, and newfound faith. She expressed optimism for his potential rehabilitation.
As for Paddy Maher, he received a Youth Rehabilitation Order for three years for his role in the robbery.
Detective Inspector Adam Stacey, who led the investigation, described the killing as “vicious and callous,” expressing sympathy for Mr Erfani’s loved ones. He also commended the efforts of first responders, forensic teams, and all involved in the investigation and prosecution.
This tragic case has left the Cheltenham community reflecting on the consequences of youth violence and the importance of support and intervention for vulnerable young people.
