The memory of Daniel Brough, a cherished father and passionate footballer from Coleford in the Forest of Dean, continues to inspire community spirit and support nearly a year after his sudden passing. At just 35 years old, Daniel was tragically found at his home on the evening of August 13, 2024, the victim of a heart muscle disease known as idiopathic cardiomyopathy—an illness he and his family never suspected he had.
Daniel’s sister, Leah Childs, recalls the shock the family endured: “We had no idea Daniel was facing any heart issues, and the sudden loss left us all reeling. The post-mortem revealed the cause, but it didn’t lessen the pain.” Despite grappling with mental health challenges such as depression, anxiety, and schizophrenia, Daniel was known for his vibrant personality and a heart big enough to include everyone he cared about.
To honor his legacy, Daniel’s family organizes “Dannos Memorial Day,” a lively community event celebrating his life and passions. Set to take place on August 16, starting at noon at the English Bicknor Village Hall, the event promises music, food, games, and a special friendly football match where teams compete for a trophy engraved in Daniel’s name. This family fun day draws participants of all ages, reflecting Daniel’s inclusive spirit and love for football, a sport he played avidly and supported as a Bristol City fan.

The family also channels their efforts into supporting mental health awareness. This year, the event’s fundraising will benefit Mycelium, a local mental health support group in Coleford that Daniel intended to join. Leah explains, “We want to continue Daniel’s legacy by supporting those who need it most, just as he fought his own battles quietly.”
Beyond his immediate family—including his seven-year-old son Albie and siblings—Daniel was a devoted uncle and a beloved friend. Known for his playful nature and endearing quirks, such as his unmatched love for Dr Pepper and off-key singing, Daniel’s spirit lives on through those who loved him and through this annual tribute designed to keep his memory alive.
Everyone is invited to join the upcoming event to celebrate Daniel’s life, support mental health initiatives, and enjoy a day of family-friendly activities filled with joy and remembrance.
