Fairford Cricket Club, nestled in the heart of the Cotswolds, is set to upgrade and expand its historic clubhouse, blending tradition with modern amenities to better serve players and the wider community.
The existing pavilion, believed to have been constructed shortly after the club’s founding year of 1889, has stood for over 130 years. While the club’s origins date back even further to 1843, 1889 marks the year when land was secured for a dedicated ground and the club played its inaugural match against Kempsford. Over time, the pavilion and surrounding grounds have evolved into a cherished community hub.
Today, Fairford Cricket Club not only supports cricket enthusiasts of all ages but also hosts local sports teams and community events, including the popular Fairford Festival and Fireworks. The venue doubles as a dynamic workspace, offering facilities for small businesses and remote workers, thanks to a partnership with Business Connect that fosters local collaboration between enterprises and community groups.

Youth development remains at the core of the club’s mission, boasting teams across various junior age groups and delivering top-tier coaching for senior players competing in County League matches. Beyond sport, Friday evenings have become a social fixture, welcoming members and non-players alike for a relaxed atmosphere with a subsidised bar and beer garden available year-round. Social membership is affordable at £25 annually.
To meet the growing needs of its members and guests, the club committee has proposed a contemporary extension accompanied by thoughtful renovations to the existing pavilion. Plans include enhanced accessibility, expanded seating, a modernised bar and kitchen, improved storage, upgraded changing rooms, and accessible toilets. An inviting outdoor seating area will offer breathtaking views across the cricket pitch and picturesque Cotswold landscape.
The club will submit its planning application soon, with a decision anticipated in February. Clive Elliott, Chair of the Fairford Cricket Club committee, expressed optimism: “We are eager to engage the community in realising our vision for a smart, new clubhouse. Through sponsorship, donations, or other support, we can offer incentives such as branding opportunities, pavilion recognition, and discounted facility hire.”
With collective community backing, corporate sponsorships, and grants, Fairford Cricket Club aims to create a modern facility that supports not only cricket but also social and cultural activities for the entire town.
