In today’s fast-paced world, our eyes often bear the brunt of long hours spent on digital devices. Even during summer, when you might expect a break from screens, many find themselves swapping computer screens for mobile phones or tablets, leading to tired eyes and headaches.
Consultant ophthalmic surgeon Shahram Kashani emphasizes a simple, effective practice that can safeguard your vision and ease discomfort: the 20-20-20 rule. This easy habit involves taking a brief pause every 20 minutes to look at something 20 feet away for 20 seconds.
“The 20-20-20 rule helps give your eye muscles a much-needed break,” explains Mr. Kashani. “When you focus too long on screens, the tiny muscles inside your eyes remain contracted, and you blink less frequently, causing dryness, strain, and headaches.”

Prolonged screen time can lead to a condition known as digital eye strain, characterized by dry eyes, blurred vision, and headaches. Data from Ofcom’s Online Nation 2025 report highlights that UK adults spend an average of four-and-a-half hours online daily, excluding work, with younger adults spending even more time glued to their smartphone screens.
By consciously shifting your gaze to a distant object—like a tree or the far end of your garden—you help relax the focusing muscles and encourage blinking, which naturally lubricates the eyes. “Summer offers an ideal setting to build this habit since we spend more time outdoors and there’s always something at least 20 feet away to focus on,” says Mr. Kashani. “Setting a phone reminder can make it easier to remember—your eyes will appreciate it.”
However, he also advises caution for anyone experiencing prolonged eye discomfort. “If dryness, blurred vision, or discomfort persist, don’t dismiss these symptoms as mere screen fatigue. See a professional promptly to rule out any serious issues that could threaten your vision.”
Make the 20-20-20 rule part of your daily routine this summer to keep your eyes healthy and refreshed, no matter how busy life gets.
