Extra from Gavin & Stacey Finale Reveals What Cast Are Really Like

The final Christmas episode of Gavin & Stacey left fans emotional as it wrapped up the beloved series after 17 years. For Scott McGlynn, a 37-year-old extra in the finale, being part of this iconic show was a dream come true.

Since first meeting Smithy (James Corden) and Nessa (Ruth Jones), viewers have been captivated by their rollercoaster relationship. The much-anticipated conclusion did not disappoint, bringing closure that fans had eagerly awaited.

Scott described his experience on set as unparalleled, cherishing the memories and his opportunity to work alongside some of the most memorable characters, especially Nessa. With Gavin & Stacey nominated for the TV Baftas on May 11, now is the perfect time to reflect on those cherished moments.

“It was incredible to work with so much talent — the creativity in the room was electric,” Scott recalled. “Joanna Page was a sweetheart, constantly complimenting everyone’s outfits. I even got to spend time with Russell Tovey, an actor I’ve admired since I was a teenager. The atmosphere was emotional too.”

He also fondly remembered celebrating Ruth Jones’ birthday on set. “She was feeding me cake — that was a lovely experience,” Scott shared.

The finale’s Bafta nominations were surprisingly few for a show that drew a record-breaking 19.3 million viewers. Ruth Jones earned a nomination for her role as Nessa in the comedy category, while the show was also up for the publicly-voted Memorable Moment award. This nod celebrated the poignant scene where Larry Lamb’s character, Mick, confronted Smithy about his wedding plans, stirring heartfelt emotions on Christmas Day.

For Scott, the connection to the series is deeply personal. Growing up in Barry Island and sharing a love for the show with his late father made his participation in the finale especially meaningful.

“Being part of Gavin & Stacey was incredibly special to me,” Scott explained. “My dad was a huge fan and passed away suddenly last year, just months before filming. Getting to be involved felt like I was doing it for him — he would have been so proud.”

Stepping onto the set brought back memories of his childhood and felt like reuniting with family. “It was surreal to join these iconic characters who have been part of my life since the very first episode. The whole experience was emotional and unforgettable for everyone involved in creating this amazing episode.”
